THE HAGUE, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Dutch police announced on Tuesday that they are investigating a fire that severely damaged power cables and caused major train disruptions near Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, with the possibility of criminal activity under consideration.
The incident occurred on the opening day of the NATO summit in The Hague. Dutch Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel stated that sabotage could not be ruled out.
The fire was reported at 5:41 a.m. local time, next to the railway track between Amsterdam and Schiphol. Approximately 30 power cables were damaged to such an extent that complete replacement was required. Repairs are expected to continue throughout the day.
Forensic teams quickly secured the scene and launched an investigation.
"The police are explicitly taking into account a criminal act and are further examining the circumstances surrounding the incident," the police said in a press release. "As of now, no arrests have been made."
Train services to and from Schiphol were brought to a standstill for several hours. While service south of the airport later resumed, northern routes remained closed.
As a result, no trains are expected to operate between Schiphol and Utrecht or Amsterdam until late in the evening. ■
