GUANGZHOU, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Dai Daojin, a former senior political advisor of central China's Hunan Province, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on Tuesday for accepting bribes.

Dai, formerly deputy secretary of the leading Party members group of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and vice chairperson of the committee, was found to have accepted bribes worth over 107 million yuan (about 15 million U.S. dollars) in a period spanning more than two decades since 2000.

According to a statement by the Intermediate People's Court of Zhuhai in south China's Guangdong Province, Dai had taken advantage of his various positions in Hunan to seek profits for others in matters such as business operation, project contracting and job promotion.

The court also found that between 2021 and 2023, after his retirement, Dai continued to use his influence to benefit others in matters such as project contracting and payment settlement, and accepted bribes totaling over 3.6 million yuan in return.

Dai was stripped of his political rights for life, and all of his personal property will be confiscated, the court sentence read.

While the severity of his crimes warranted a death sentence, Dai was given a lenient sentence due to several mitigating factors, including that he had truthfully confessed his crimes after being taken into custody, shown remorse, and actively returned illicit gains, according to the court statement. ■
