JAKARTA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government announced on Monday that it has evacuated 96 nationals from Iran as the Iran-Israel conflict escalates.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said that all citizens were taken to Azerbaijan on Saturday before flying to Indonesia.
He expressed gratitude to his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, for Azerbaijan's assistance in facilitating the evacuation.
He conveyed this appreciation during his bilateral meeting with Bayramov, on the sidelines of the 51st session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul, Turkiye, which took place from June 21 to 22, according to a statement from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry issued on Monday.
The repatriation of Indonesian citizens from Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, will be in several stages, said Judha Nugraha, director of citizen protection at the ministry.
The plan is to fly the first group on a commercial plane on Monday which will arrive in Jakarta on Tuesday, he said. ■
